Just a couple of years ago, you had to pay upward of $1,000 for a low-voltage track lighting system. But now several companies are offering attractive kits for less than $200.

How do they work? The transformer (which reduces the voltage from 120 to 12) is mounted directly over any existing round electrical box. The reduced voltage is sent down the track to power the high-intensity light fixtures supplied with the kit.

Some kits have fixed tracks with directional lights or lights that hang from adjustable cables (top photo). Others come with a track that you custom-bend into any configuration before mounting it on the ceiling (bottom photo). You’ll be able to find at least one style to suit your taste at most home centers.
