Q  I have a problem with chipmunks burrowing around the stoop at the front entryway of my home. How can I keep the little critters from digging there again?

Kurt V. Meyer, via e-mail

A  You’re experiencing a common problem that’s now occurring in the city as well as in the suburbs and rural areas. Chipmunks typically start their tunnels next to something solid, such as front steps or sidewalks, and burrow under it for protection.

To keep the critters out, bury a strip of hardware cloth 2 ft. deep in the ground around the steps and along the sidewalk. Chipmunks won’t be able to get through it and they won’t dig down far enough to get under it. You can buy 2-ft.-wide strips of hardware cloth at home centers, so you won’t have to cut it.

If your chipmunk problem persists and they start to dig somewhere else on your property, simply catch them in live traps and relocate them away from residential areas.
