A buildup of soap scum and mineral
deposits on a shower door can
become so tough that standard
household cleaners can’t remove it. The strongest cleaners (especially
acidic ones that dissolve mineral
deposits) usually aren’t an option
because they can harm aluminum
door parts and many shower surround
materials.
So try this: Remove the doors and lay them on cardboard or old carpet. Then scour away the buildup with rubbing compound, a mild abrasive intended for auto body work ($5 at home centers and auto parts stores). An auto body polisher ($30) is the fastest way to clean glass that’s fairly smooth. To clean the deep grooves in the door shown here, we followed up with a buffing wheel ($5) and drill. Keep an old toothbrush handy to scrub the compound out of the grooves around the door’s frame before it dries. This method may not work on the rough side of heavily textured glass such as “rain” glass.
