The nation's taste in coffee has gotten more sophisticated
Fair-trade coffee tastes great -- and can make you feel good. The coffee comes from tiny family-run cooperatives in regions of Latin America, Asia, and Africa where growing conditions are best and the use of chemical fertilizers is low, says Paul Rice, who founded
TransFair USA, the country's only independent, third-party certifier of fair-trade products.
Local workers get paid better.
Recently, fair-trade coffee has moved from specialty markets to giant retailers such as Dunkin' Donuts and Wal-Mart. "The nation's taste in coffee has gotten more sophisticated," says Rice. And we're willing to pay a little more to see "the little guy get a fair shake."
