A Cooking Club's Clever Idea

A Taste of Home reader shares an inventive theme for a dinner party.

My daughter and I started a monthly cooking club with some of our friends a few years ago. Every time we meet, there's a new theme -- Herb Day, Pizza Party and Tailgating are just a few of the cooking themes we've enjoyed.

Not too long ago, it was my turn to host, and I was having trouble coming up with an idea we hadn't already used. I wondered if we were all "washed up" in the theme department ... and with that in mind, I decided to have a Laundry Day.

My menu included an appetizer that had been softened, a soup made with something dried, a bread made with unbleached flour, a main dish that had been folded, and a fluffed dessert.

Luscious Laundry List
My Shrimp Spread, prepared with softened cream cheese, is a beautiful pale salmon color. The Worcestershire sauce provides just the right amount of zest.

Next on the menu was Chicken Wild Rice Soup. Following the theme for the meal, I used dried thyme and tarragon. This hearty soup always receives many compliments.

Grandma's Apple Bread calls for unbleached flour. The aromas of apple, cinnamon, and nuts are delicious.

For the main course, I served Spanish Rice Empanadas. The turnovers call for piecrust, which must be folded into pockets. Inside, you will find tender pieces of chicken and rice accented with spices.

The fluffed filling in my Frozen Pumpkin Mousse Pie forms beautiful peaks and is nutmeg-colored.

Dirt-Free Decorations
My decorations put a fun spin on the often burdensome task of laundry. Folded towels became place mats, and matching washcloths were the napkins. Small bottles of fabric softener were the "poles" for a mini clothesline that ran from one setting to the other.

The centerpiece was a small laundry basket labeled "Dirty Clothes." I had filled it with new socks and dishcloths, which I used as party favors.

By the end of the evening, we had all decided that this kind of laundry didn't leave us feeling one bit "wrung out." Chicken Wild Rice Soup Spanish Rice Empanadas Grandma's Apple Bread Frozen Pumpkin Mousse Pie Shrimp Spread
