Cheap Halloween Chic

The best Halloween costumes are crafty not costly.

With a little creativity, you don't have to spend a fortune this Halloween:

Think inside the box. Cardboard boxes can turn into countless costumes: TVs, skyscrapers, Rubik's Cubes, dolls in their packaging and more, says Jeanne Fleming, artistic director of the Village Halloween Parade in New York City. Cut and decorate boxes with paint, tinfoil or plastic wrap.

Outdate yourself. Go on a treasure hunt in the attic or basement for old hats, scarves, blue-ruffled tuxedo shirts.

Be crafty. Dress up items you already have. Cut black fabric from a broken umbrella to create wings for a bat ensemble, and then dress in all black. Use felt to make beaks and feet for duck costumes, with white shirts and orange leggings as the body.
