Make this Thanksgiving a healthy one with tips from Walter Willett, MD, professor of nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health and author of Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy:

  • Healthiest dishes. "For the stuffing, we use olive oil instead of butter, whole-grain bread instead of white, and nuts and dried fruit, not sausage. We use half the sugar in my grandmother's cranberry relish recipe, and add smoked turkey instead of ham hocks to collard greens."

  • Portion control tactics. "I run longer than usual on Thanksgiving morning to compensate for the extra calories later. At dinner, I'm not as concerned about calorie watching as overeating. I know I'll feel terrible if I get stuffed, so I try to put small amounts on my plate and eat slowly."

I never would have thought to use olive oil instead of butter, or whole wheat bread. I guess sometimes the simplist ideas are the smartest ones.
