2. Dig 6 to 8 in. of soil from the sidewalk area. Then snap a chalk line on the house to represent the top of the sidewalk. Excavate to a depth of 9 in. below the chalk line with a slight slope away from the house. Caution: Call the local utilities to locate any buried lines in the vicinity before digging.
