1. Cut chicken wire with a tin snips to fit around bushes and other plants. Dig a 3-in. deep trench under the edges and bend the chicken wire down into the trench. Push stakes into the ground 12 in. apart in every direction.

I have looked at your directions for dog proofing shrubs. I do not think they work. Eventually weeds will come up through the chicken wire/mulch. Having the chicken wire there will make it difficult to pull weeds out, work in fertilizer and work in the old mulch as it decomposes. As well, if you are adding or removing plants, the chicken wire will have to be pulled up and replaced everytime.
