14. Caulk around the toilet base with silicone caulk, leaving the back end of the base uncaulked. The gap leaves a space for moisture under the toilet to escape. (Some local codes require caulk around the entire base.)

I need some help. My toilet is leaking from the base. My husband (an artist) wants to just tighten the bolts. I am an analyst. I'd like to take it apart, find the problem, fix it, and put it back together. I will do what you guys suggest, as you are the experts. Thanks.

I have subscribed to your magazine for several years. It has been very helpful at times. I am not the most confident of handyman men but this information on the leaky commode was most helpful. I needed to and have replaced the anchor bolts for a commode and want you to know your information here was MOST helpful to me. Thank You for helping me be successful.

the pictures show the flooring above the flange and below it. why? i thought the flange has to be flush with the floor.

Great info, more than I knew. I installed a new toilet with a thicker than standard wax ring. After several weeks it started to leak around the wax ring. The wax separated cleanly from the toilet leaving very little residue. The flange isn't broken but does tilt down toward the back. The front edge is slightly 1/16" above the floor while the back is low about 1/8" below the surface. Doesnt' seem like it should be a problem. It's a new class 5 Kohler..
