1. Unscrew the water closet nut with a wrench. If the bolt spins along with the nut, grab the exposed bolt above the nut with a locking pliers. Loosen the nut just enough to squeeze in a hacksaw blade below the nut and saw through the bolt. Tip Use a close-quarters hacksaw like the one shown ($5) or wrap a rag around a bare blade.

I have subscribed to your magazine for several years. It has been very helpful at times. I am not the most confident of handyman men but this information on the leaky commode was most helpful. I needed to and have replaced the anchor bolts for a commode and want you to know your information here was MOST helpful to me. Thank You for helping me be successful.

the pictures show the flooring above the flange and below it. why? i thought the flange has to be flush with the floor.

Great info, more than I knew. I installed a new toilet with a thicker than standard wax ring. After several weeks it started to leak around the wax ring. The wax separated cleanly from the toilet leaving very little residue. The flange isn't broken but does tilt down toward the back. The front edge is slightly 1/16" above the floor while the back is low about 1/8" below the surface. Doesnt' seem like it should be a problem. It's a new class 5 Kohler..
