Chapel in the Hills

3788 Chapel Ln., Rapid City, South Dakota

The unusual multiroofed timber building seen in the woods at the foot of the Black Hills is a Norwegian stavkirke (stave church). It is an exact replica of the Borgund Stavkirke, the best-preserved example in Norway (the Norwegian government provided the original blueprints for its Rapid City twin). The gabled roofs, growing smaller as they ascend, are these churches’ most eye-catching feature.

The tranquillity of the church and its hilly grounds is as much of a draw as the architecture, as a stroll on the Prayer/Meditation Walk winding behind the church will attest. Also on the grounds are a log cabin built by a Black Hills prospector, and the gift shop is housed in a stabbur—a Norwegian wooden building with a grass roof.
Open May – Sept.
