In fall visitors see leaves ablaze with color. In spring, mountain laurels in full flower abound. Visitors also find the ultimate getaway here: camping on more than 10,000 acres of wilderness and the peace that comes with being immersed in nature. Once dense forest, the vast acres of the Sods were clear-cut by loggers in the 1880s and then scorched deeply by fire—set off by sparks from steam locomotives. Since then the forest has regrown, and cranberry, huckleberry, and blueberry bushes thrive amid the rock formations. In summer at Bear Rocks, a bountiful berry harvest is yours for the picking.
