Established in 1988 to protect the fragile ecosystem of the state's second largest peat land, this wildlife refuge boasts a tremendous variety of vegetation—from an expanse of trees and shrubs to an array of fungi. This gorgeous habitat is home to an abundance of diverse wildlife. Butterflies and damselflies are often seen flitting around, as are more than 200 different species of birds. You may even encounter a lone bear, bobcat, or moose on occasion. There are a few short trails for hiking or skiing around the perimeter of the meadow, but perhaps the best way to enjoy the ecological diversity of the watery refuge is by canoeing or kayaking up or down the Sunkhaze Stream and its tributaries exploring the variety of landscape that the bogs offer. Insect repellent is strongly recommended during the warmer months.
