Most hardware stores and home centers carry these basic tools and materials.

Tools:
  • Circular saw with masonry blade; $4 for blade

  • 2-lb. maul; $8 (a regular hammer is slower, but OK)

  • Mason’s cold chisel; $4

  • Wood float; $5

  • Sponge float, to match texture of rough concrete; $5

  • Corner edging tool; $7

  • Shop vacuum and broom

  • Release agent for wood forms (light oil, WD-40)

  • Gloves, dust mask, goggles and hearing protection

Materials:

  • Sand or concrete mix; $2.50 per 60-lb. bag

  • Concrete acrylic fortifier; $10 per gallon
