2. Install cement board over the existing subfloor. Trowel on a layer of thin-set mortar, then secure the cement board with cement board screws. Cover the seams with mesh fiberglass tape and thin-set to create a “unibody” floor. Snap chalk lines on the floor to mark the tile layout.
