Coming to some theaters this Friday and spreading to others on November 16, Steven Spielberg’s new film Lincoln hits at a prime time for Americans: Election mania will be over, leaving us all to ponder any changes to the political status quo. That in mind, I caught an early screening and came up with a few reasons you’ll want to see it ASAP.
1. It’s inspirational: Daniel Day-Lewis gives a stunning performance as our nation’s 16th president, a towering man with a gentle voice and a huge weight on his shoulders. The story here is primarily that of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, and while it doesn’t exactly have a twist ending, it’s moving nonetheless. Here’s what our country’s capable of with a good man at the helm and cooperation on both sides.
2. It’s funny: Who knew Honest Abe was such a joker? The screenplay is littered with great anecdotes from the prez—they’re often hilarious and always thought-provoking.
3. It’s a star-studded who’s-who: Sure, you know Lincoln‘s got Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, and Tommy Lee Jones, but you’ll be surprised at the other folks who pop up. (Spoiler alert: It’s got James Spader!) Keep your eyes on this flick come awards season: Its leads are sure to get nominations.
4. It’s gorgeous: Longtime Spielberg-collaborator Janusz Kamiński handles Lincoln‘s cinematography, and the movie’s a visual feast. You’re definitely getting your money’s worth seeing this on a big screen.
So: Plan on catching Lincoln? Let us know what you think in the comments.
