Middle-school years can be a haze of hormones and apathy. But to principal Doug Lowery, of Hilliard (Ohio) Memorial, getting through to a preteen isn’t rocket science. Named 2004 National Middle School Principal of the Year, Lowery knows all 680 kids by name. He serves them lunch, plays football and teaches weekend study sessions. His state-of-the-art exercise and nutrition program boosted attendance and alertness. Says Lowery, “Kids may forget what we taught them, but they’ll never forget how we treated them.”
