Pitchers, quarterbacks and playmakers, sure, but who’s got the top mascot? The feathery green Philadelphia Phillie Phanatic has been sitting on laps, spilling popcorn, dancing with umpires and launching mustard-coated hot dogs into the crowd with relish since his debut in 1978. Tony Kornheiser of ESPN gives the Phanatic his vote as the funniest team creature out there. But for reminding fans that games are supposed to be fun, nothing beats the Banana Slug of the University of California, Santa Cruz. In 1965, students chose the bright yellow mollusk, native to the region, to protest the fierce athletic competition at America’s colleges. Win or lose, you still gotta laugh.
