Best Prom

These teens arrive in high style to the school gymnasium.

And it’s still held in a gym. Students at Pennsbury High School in Fairless Hill, Pennsylvania, “wouldn’t have it any other way,” says principal William Katz. Up to 1,200 students attend the prom the third Saturday in May. Buffed, coiffed, corsaged and tuxed, they arrive by trolley car, scooter, kiddie car or motorized stegosaur. Some have helicoptered in or zoomed up in the Batmobile. As videos roll and parents cheer, the kids walk a red carpet into a school decorated to the hilt. But isn’t there a nicer place than the gym? Says 2004 class president Bob Costa, “Spend four years every day at school, and then suddenly for your prom you go to a hotel? That seems crazy to me.”
