Drawing more than a million visitors a year, WaterFire, an award-winning Providence, Rhode Island, outdoor sculpture by Barnaby Evans, begins at sunset. Hovering above three downtown rivers, bonfires are lit by black-clad volunteers in passing boats as music plays. Columbus, Ohio, hosted its own WaterFire display in 2005, and other cities have similar plans. Evans, 53, has combined his passion for art and the environment for 30 years. Representing the powerful forces of water and fire, his braziers burn on select evenings from April to October and have helped revitalize the downtown.
