39 More Secrets Your HR Person Won’t Tell You

HR professionals reveal their insider secrets.

By Michelle Crouch

1. “The No. 1 thing in job security is your relationship with your boss. Even if he says, ‘I’m sorry I really wanted to keep you, but they made me lay you off,’ that’s almost never true. He probably made that decision.” –Cynthia Shapiro, former human resource executive and author of “Corporate Confidential: 50 Secrets Your Company Doesn’t Want You to Know.

2. “If you’re accused of sexual harassment, even if you’re found to be not guilty, people will always look at you funny afterwards. It can kill your career.” –Laurie Ruettimann, HR consultant and speaker in Raleigh, N.C .

3. “Even in jobs where you test applicants and those with the top scores are supposed to get the job, I’ve seen hiring managers fix scores to get the people they like.” –HR representative in the manufacturing industry.

4. “If you have a question, come to my office. Don’t corner me in the bathroom.” –HR professional at a mid-sized firm in North Carolina

5. “Children and hobbies do not belong on a résumé. And never, ever say, ‘Now that my kids are in college, I’m ready to get back in the workforce.’ ” –HR professional at a mid-sized firm in North Carolina

6. “Someone might tell you to ‘Be yourself’ in the interview. Don’t be yourself. That’s the worst advice ever. We don’t want people who are neurotic and quirky and whatever else. All we care about is your skill and experience.” –Laurie Ruettimann, HR consultant and speaker in Raleigh, N.C.

7. “You’re right to be paranoid. The company is always watching you, and there’s a record of everything you do: every phone call, every text, every tweet and instant message. At most companies, they save that data forever.” –Laurie Ruettimann, HR consultant and speaker in Raleigh, N.C

8. “I was asked by one CEO to hire the long-legged girl with the long dark hair even though she didn’t have the right skills. Another time, I was instructed not to hire anyone with children because the company had too many people leaving for soccer games. That kind of thing happens all the time.” –Cynthia Shapiro

9. “I know many of you met your former spouse at the company. But the thing is, for every one of you, there are five people it doesn’t work out as well for. And your office romance can and will be held against you.” –Kris Dunn, chief human resources officer at Atlanta-based Kinetix who blogs at HRcapitalist.com.

10. “Many people think, ‘If I work extra hard, I’m going to get noticed.’ But it doesn’t work that way. If you want to advance, some of the responsibility falls on you to toot your own horn. Make sure your supervisor and your supervisor’s supervisor are well of aware of what you’re contributing.” –Michael Slade, HR director at Eric Mower and Associates, an integrated marketing communications agency.

11. “I know a lot more about you when you walk in the door than you realize. I’ll search for you on the web and often use my own personal network to do a pre-interview reference check.” –Senior HR Executive in New York City

12. “Generally speaking, you only put someone on paid leave if you’re pretty certain that they might be terminated from the company once you do your investigation.” –Kris Dunn

13. “Never accept the job immediately. Say you need to think about it overnight. Once you sign on the dotted line there’s no room for negotiation.” –A human resources professional in New York City

14. “If you get fired, don’t just stomp out and go on with your life. The company may be willing to give you some severance, especially if you can point to someone different from you who didn’t get as severe a punishment. Just saying, ‘Well, I talked to my attorney’ (even if you don’t have an attorney) can also give you some leverage.’” –Suzanne Lucas, a former HR executive and the  “Evil HR lady” on bnet.com

15. “If we ask ‘What salary are you looking for?’ say you’re flexible, or say it depends on the responsibilities of the job. Try not to name a salary unless we really push you, because that gives us a leg up in the negotiating.” –A human resources professional in New York City

16. “I’ve always hated the big United Way drive at work.  Not because of the United Way.  Great organization.  Because of the smell of solicitation in the air, and because we are usually in the middle of it.” –Kris Dunn

17. “Companies do have black lists. It’s not written down anywhere but it’s a list of people they’d be happy to get rid of if the opportunity arises. If you feel invisible, if you’re getting bad assignments, if your boss is ignoring you, or if they move your office, you’re probably on it.” –Cynthia Shapiro

18. “I may say ‘I’m terminating you because you didn’t meet performance measures.’ I’m not going to say it’s because you’re a pain in the butt and piss people off every time you interact with them.’” –HR Manager at a healthcare facility

19. “I once had someone send me Forget-me-not seeds with their thank you note. Yes, thank me for taking the time, that’s great. But sending me seeds? That’s weird.” –Sharlyn Lauby, human resources consultant in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

20. “Don’t lie about your salary. Ever. Even if your employer doesn’t tell us (and most do), we’ll find out eventually. I’ve terminated two people for doing that.” –A human resources professional in New York City

21. “One time a candidate sent – I love this – a thank you card with a professional picture of herself, which quite honestly became the running joke for weeks. The picture was blown up and posted in my office with hearts drawn around it.” –HR director at a financial services firm

22. “Don’t ever tell me that you have to have this job because you’re going to lose your house, your kids have nothing to eat, your mother has cancer. Companies aren’t a charity.” –Suzanne Lucas

23. “Networking does not mean using Facebook or Linked In. It means going to events, getting your face in front of people and setting up informational interviews.” –A human resources professional in New York City

24. “We get résumés on fancy schmantzy papers. We get them with gold-pressed lettering. We get them in binders and in document protectors with ribbons. None of that sways me.” –HR Manager in St. Cloud, Minnesota

25. “98 percent of the résumés we receive when we post a position on a big jobs site like hotjobs, monster or careerbuilder are junk, people who are nowhere near qualified. We’ll get a guy who’s a bar manager applying for a director of public affairs position. Or a shoe salesman. That’s why we like posting jobs on websites that target specific industries.” –Michael Slade, HR director at Eric Mower and Associates, an integrated marketing communications agency.

26. “Your job isn’t safe just because you’re pregnant or a new mom. Lots of people get pink slips while they’re on maternity leave. Companies can do it as part of a larger layoff, include you in there and create a justification for it.” –Cynthia Shapiro

27. “Some companies do everybody’s raises on their anniversary dates. I’m not a fan of that because if the budget comes out in January, those poor people hired in December get, ‘Oh sorry, we’d like to give you more but we gave a huge increase to Bob so you’re just going to get 2 percent.’” –Suzanne Lucas

28. “I don’t lay people off at the end of the day because I think it’s rotten to get a whole workday out of someone, then lay them off. I always lay them off in the morning.” –A human resources professional in New York City

29. “I had somebody list their prison time as a job. And an exotic dancer who called herself a ‘customer service representative.’ ” –Sharlyn Lauby, human resources consultant in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

30. “It doesn’t take 40 hours a week to look for a job. So if you’re unemployed, do something: take classes, meet people, go to industry meetings, start a blog, read a book a week. Just don’t sit on the couch and eat Doritos.” –Ben Eubanks, HR professional in Alabama

31. “My Linked In profile is for myself, a way for me to find another job. It’s not a way to find a job with me.” –A human resources professional in New York City

32. “In interviews, everyone works well with others, and everyone learns quickly. Please tell me something else.” –HR manager in St. Cloud, Minn.

33. “I’ve seen managers not hire a woman because the environment is mostly male, and they’re worried that no matter how smart or talented she is, she won’t fit in.” –HR representative at a Fortune 500 financial services firm

34. “If it’s been a week or two and I tell you ‘I don’t have an update yet,’ that often means there’s a better candidate we’re talking to, but we can’t tell you that in case they decide not to take the job.” –Recruiting consultant Rich DeMatteo. Philadelphia, Pa.

35. “If you call to check on the status of your résumé  and I ask, ‘What job did you apply for?’’ If you don’t know, you’re done.” –HR professional at a mid-sized firm in North Carolina

36. “When we had someone go out on disability and we knew he was faking it, we didn’t want to go to court to prove it. So we put him on the end of the assembly line in a job where we knew he wouldn’t succeed. Eventually, we were able to fire him.” –HR pro at a mid-level staffing firm

37. “I have better things to do than deal with who slept with who, or who’s talking about you behind your back. Sometimes I feel like a high school guidance counselor.” –HR professional at a mid-sized firm in North Carolina

38. “Yes, I have access to everyone’s salary but I don’t look unless I have to. There’s nothing worse than having to reprimand someone, and then seeing they make $60,000 more than me.” –HR professional at a midsize firm in North Carolina

39. “Don’t stalk me.” –A human resources professional in New York City

Yesterday a guy came in to apply for some positions. He stood at my counter and flipped through the notebook holding various applications, postings and porn magazines. On the way out, he asked if I’d like any reading material. He won’t likely be getting a job here.

I had another guy once who wanted me to help him fill out his application–because he’d had too many beers that day. It was 11:00 in the morning.

I just turned 60 and have been looking for a job for 2 years.  It’s been horrible so I decided to go for a government job.  I didn’t care if it was Federal, State or Local.  You have to test and they DO interview you but your chances are much better.  Just got a job offer yesterday with a large local county government.
Just a thought for all of you out there going crazy trying to figure out a plan.

    • Floridasunshine

How do you go about getting a job with the government? I want to try and get a job with the DMV. Just can’t find the resources.

  • Andy

Some of these listed is mostly common sense. The first impression (no matter who you first lock eyes with) ALWAYS counts, as well as how you dress and present yourself. And if you’re so desperate for a job you stalk someone, you need to look at yourself in the mirror and take a long, long look and ask yourself “Am I really this crazy?” if you answer yes, get some medical help you might get some money out of it until you can find a job.

  • Greg

I find it ironic that one individual uses Linkedin to find jobs, yet is upset at the idea that other people might want reciprocation.  American capitalism and the gimme gimmes at it’s best!  No wonder the economy collapsed.

    • Michelle

I noticed that one, as well. I can’t understand a Human Resources person (meaning responsible for hiring, in some form) only wants to use networking for their OWN job search, “find a different job”, meaning they’re not happy where they’re at. Yet doesn’t expect people to reach out in the same manner to make connections that hopefully lead to a new job.

  • Jbarkerman

Some of this stuff is reprehensible. Makes me wonder if HR is staffed by all the people who are still mad about how badly they were treated as McDonald’s employees in high school. Sheesh.

    • CDR

Haha exactly! Because their degrees are the McD of the academic world. They are all jealous people.

  • Dltimm

Human Resource departments are no longer an advocate for the employee.  They are the enemy:  they are the stalker behind you, making sure you are not surfing the net, texting, or on a personal phone call – but THEY can do it themselves.  Human Resource departments, in a word —– SUCK.

    • BeReal

When have HR departments ever been an advocate for the employee? It would be incredibly naive to think that they have anything other than the best interests of the employer as their priority. YOU need to be your own best advocate. No one else is going to.

    • http://www.facebook.com/GDOGNCBD Greg Kopp

exactly, you can bet they do what a normal employee is prohibited from, and then they can justify it by calling it research into an issue they become aware of.if the boss says keep me posted on what you find or progress, they can say it was unfounded rumor since they were not able to find anything supporting it.

    HR people are generally useless.

They sometimes acting below the belt. When they see your facebook status saying that your pissed off, they will ask you over and over again until they become satisfied and get the answer that they want.

I read an article in Readers Digest in their  “Things your….. wont tell you ,” this one being HR person and it said if you are over 50, dont put graduations dates on resumes.  The online applications I have seen all require those in their application process or it doesn’t let you continue.

I’ll be 72 in a couple months and I was just hired by Home Depot (Feb 2012) — I’ve been looking for five years and Home Depot came through for me. But, it was a case of need… they NEED a professional sign guy (or gal) to make their signs, all of which have been done by amateurs, so I’m sure the HR lady will be happy to have me — I’ve been in the sign business for over 40 years. It’s really exciting to be part of the work force again. Retirement is a killer.

    • nancy

      I’m happy for you.

  • 112563HR

Wow. Now we know why we’ve never heard of any of these people and why so many just say “HR Representative;” most of these people are a very poor reflection  on their company and the HR department.  They would probably get fired.  Trust me, this is not the norm nor is it what any HR professional should strive to be.  Think Zappos, Snag A Job, Nordstrom and Google.  Those are transparent companies who know the value of the relationship between human resources and the employee.

  • David Curry

those quotes would work just as well in an article titled “39 secrets your date won’t tell you”

  • Anonymous

Never before, in the history of the world, have employers had so many employees to choose from. They simply don’t care anymore. Firing you over a peanut shell on your desk means nothing to them because they might have a better fit in by noon the next day.

  • Teresa

I hold a MBA and I am 56 years old.  Worked at a university and community college and cannot find anything full time.  I have been working retail for over a year and part time at that: 20 to 32 hours a week.  It doesn’t pay my bills.
I want to switch gears and get into something besides retail.  Any suggestions?

  • Beltz

Boy ; that`s true. When people doing wrong get kept and the honest one who badly needed the job they took away from me-whay does that say about the company ? I had to file an appeal to even get my unemployment.

  • Ray

HR Departments are evil. Thank God they are on their way out.

  • Stella

HR ‘professionals’ are a waste of time and energy. Most firms can, and do, chop them the second the opportunity arises. When a company needs to shed excess fat, they ALWAYS start with HR, because it is filled with talentless no hopers who couldn’t get into any real management positions. Total joke and waste of space.

  • nancy

It appears they have an overflated idea of their worth. I would not ever go to an HR rep for anything except my exit interview.

  • nancy

Also, HR reps NEVER do anything to help fix any problems in the company. They let the bully managers bully and harrass away and do their best to cover it up. Screw the company I guess but suck up to the evil middle managers.

    • Anonymous

Amen to that, I’ve seen it far too many times!

At the end of the day, to all of you bashing HR, you should remember that HR doesnt exist for the employees–it exists to support the company.  No HR executive is going to choose your boss over you….unless the boss is so blatently wrong that they are a major risk to the company.  Which has to rise to the level of quid pro quo sexual harrassment or other legal issue.  I’ve been a HR exec in a large organization for over 15 years.  When employees start thinking like owners and thinking about what is best for the company–and less like employees who are in for me, me, me–you’ll become more successful in your jobs.  And trash talking your colleagues–even your HR ones–doesnt make you a positive teamplayer or contributor either.    Reality, folks.

    • Anonymous

It would be good for you to remember that without the incentive of “me, me, me” none of us would feel led to work. Why should we care what’s good for a company that doesn’t reward hard work, and just promotes butt kissers?

  • jrt

    these are old… what’s NEW !

  • Jade7

Ha.  This was hilarious, even if I already suspected so many of these things are true.  No offense, but you don’t think that most people think HR people are well. . .ha. . . .

The good news is karma or whatever you want to call it is very real.  Here’s a suggestion.  Just be genuine, respectful, and give a darn that there may be good people coming to you, and they may be great employees.    Have admins and managers as well as HR people stop using subjective  junk, like, “Will I like him or her?” as ameasure in considering an employee–at then putting it down to “fit.”  What a completely bogus word.  Fit = someone with some influence somewhere didn’t like you for some reason. Your brightness could have intimidated them.  Perhaps your breast size was bigger.  Maybe you seemed like a genuinely happy person and they were not, and it just pissed them off.  Many you didn’t have the kind of personality that infers it will kiss peoples’ butts that think they deserve kissing.  There’s a term that is very true and very powerful.  It’s called horizontal violence, and it can be very sneaky with the backbiting–it also rolls down vertically too.

And listen, some of the most mealy mouthed, personable people aren’t worth their weight in straw, and they get hired only to sneakily backstab their way up–joining ranks with the other stabbers.  And that’s the great department or company that a person should work for.  It’s disgusting.  There’s such a thing as ethics, fairness, integrity, and decency.  And when managers don’t do the right thing, how about stepping up HR and telling them, rather than looking the other way?  It is just so sad to see how it’s become every person for himself or herself in the workplace.

  • Galpinman

I don’t know about the us, but here in Australia, I’d never leave my Govt. job as its awesome…good pay, the best job security and plenty of leave. Forget those pvt sector jobs where u need to brown nose all day.

Guess what? None of this is really a surprise. I’d rather spend my time with an ex-con than any HR person. And *please* when I show up 10 minutes early for the interview (because we all know you HR types think on time is late) don’t keep me waiting 30 minutes past my interview time while you do NOTHING! I know when I’m being played, and my time is more important than yours, since I’m the one who’s looking for a job!

My MUM was always the person I turned to when I needed something. It was her advice I counted on, and her that I talked to about my most needful things. She died 3 months ago, and at first I was so lost without her I did not think I could function. But then I found the win ex back spell relationship therapist. He has filled that empty hole in my heart from the loss of my mother. I can turn to him for relationship and spiritual advice. He is always available and he always cares. . Even better, I finally asked him to perform a love spell on me, and it worked!! I met a man who had also experienced a great loss and we were able to become close friends and provide support to each other. We have fallen in love and my life could now be better. Thank you, relationship therapist oniha for helping me through the worst times of my life, for being such a great spell therapist, and for giving me a love spell that has brought me so much joy. If you doubt his ability, trust me. You should take a chance. It pays off in ways you could never even imagine. email him at winexbackspell@gmail.com

I truly believe the comment that HR is there for the company and not the employee. I have seen it. Sad part is when a good employee goes to HR with a valid concern about his workplace and then becomes the tartGet for retribution. Private companies bury and smear the whistleblower.

About half of these rules can be tossed. I have never sent a thank you note for an interview. If a note is that important for me to get the job do i really want to work for the company. Also If my first interview does not have at least one non hr person i wont come back for a secound interview, even if asked. As a vet I use headhunting organizations and even though was “unemployed” for a year, I did temp and day labor to pay the bills, I was hired by a great small company. The HR department is one person, and her job is mostly to do benifits paperwork for the company. I actually interviewed with the department head and the hr person at the same time. The rules I would say are true would be to leave your phone in your car. have a clean car when you go to your interview, match your resume to the job distcription. Resume of two pages and ditch the cover letter, unless actually asked to send one. Also dont be afraid to turn down a job offer if you really dont think you would succeed at the company.

“Don’t lie about your salary. Ever. Even if your employer doesn’t tell us (and most do), we’ll find out eventually. I’ve terminated two people for doing that.”

LOL. What utter bullshit. Please don’t piss in my ear and tell me it’s raining. If “most” employers told you this information, you wouldn’t need to ask us, would you?

I’ve been lying about my current salary when applying for new jobs for years. “What is your present salary?” in HR speak translates to “Please give me a reason to think I can lowball you”. And when an applicant says “I make £xxx, xxx”, that translates to “That’s how much I’m willing to take this job for, which is the only question you should really have been asking me”.

I never, ever answer honestly when asked for this information. I just look the fool that asked me the question in the eye, sincerely tell them a lie, then let their greed and ineptitude do the rest to get me what I want. I’m smart enough to know that former employers will tell you to take a hike if you ask them how much they paid me. They don’t want their pay levels to be public any more than I do, because it makes their remaining staff easier to recruit.

To any young and inexperienced people reading this article, my advice is to always do exactly the same as I do in salary negotiations: say you’re already making the salary you are interested in, and already have experience in the role you want a shot at. I guarantee you won’t get caught, and if you do the worst that will happen is you’ll end up not working for someone that is more interested in lowballing you than in hiring ‘A’ Players.

My name is cheney from uk. I never believed in love spells or magic until i met this spell caster once when i went to Africa in February this year on a business summit. I meant a man who’s name is DR.EGOGO he is really powerful and could help cast spells to bring back one’s gone, lost, misbehaving lover and magic money spell or spell for a good job or luck spell .I’m now happy & a living testimony cos the man i had wanted to marry left me 3 weeks before our wedding and my life was upside down cos our relationship has been on for 3years. I really loved him, but his mother was against us and he had no good paying job. So when i met this spell caster, i told him what happened and explained the situation of things to him. At first i was undecided, skeptical and doubtful, but i just gave it a try. And in 7 days when i returned to Canada, my boyfriend (now husband) called me by himself and came to me apologizing that everything had been settled with his mom and family and he got a new job interview so we should get married. I didn’t believe it cos the spell caster only asked for my name and my boyfriends name and all i wanted him to do. Well we are happily married now and we are expecting our little kid, and my husband also got the new job and our lives became much better. His email is egogotemple@yahoo.com

I want to share my testimony to the general public on how dr anunu restored my marriage My husband left me for a younger girl, he took everything that we had in the bank and left me with nothing. The girl that he left me for was a mutual friend of ours, I thought I could trust her, she kept my kids and we gave her a place to live when she was homeless. I found out that she went to use spell to hold my husband she turn the love we have for each other to hatred, this was how she took my husband from me. Dr. anunu stopped this girl and returned my man home to me and my kids! I will never stop to share this testimony because at first I was a bit skeptical about the whole thing, if not my dr anunu life would have been unbearable for me and my kids, I am sharing this because I know there are so many marriage out there with the same problem, my dr has all the help you need. contact him on his private mail via:anunuspelltemple@ymail.com.
