Gary Erickson founded Clif Bar Inc. in 1990 after biting into another energy bar at the end of a 175-mile bike trip. Today, Erickson and his wife, Kit, run this $100 million Berkeley, California, business — named after his dad — like a mom-and-pop shop. They turned down a buyout offer to remain private and pursue the environmental and charitable causes they believe in. Unlike the garage where it all started, though, Clif Bar’s headquarters now has bathrooms and heat.
