Jefferson Lives!

By Carl M. Cannon, July 4, 2008
It seems that Reader's Digest has loyal readers inside the White House. No sooner had our July issue reached subscribers than President Bush decided to attend today’s Independence Day festivities at Monticello. Could one of our July stories inspired the Prez? Maybe so: In a feature article written by yours truly, we highlight 25 wonderful—and absolutely free—places to visit in the United States this summer. The third destination on our list is Thomas Jefferson’s home, which waives its entrance fees every Fourth of July for a swearing-in ceremony of new citizens. And that's where Bush decided last week to spend Independence Day......Read More

Wesley Clark: When Smart People Do Dumb Things

By Carl M. Cannon, July 3, 2008
Imagine that you went on a job interview for a position you’d coveted for years. Perhaps feeling a bit under-qualified, you figure you’ll dazzle your would-be employer with your intellect and your passion. You take your best shot—show how absolutely gung-ho you are—and head home to wait for what you hope will be that momentous call. Instead of phoning you, however, the Big Kahuna makes a public speech denouncing you. Yes, singling you out as the problem. And although he doesn’t mention you by name, that’s little consolation: The whole world knows who he was talking about. Your name is mud. Actually, it’s Wesley K. Clark… ...Read More

What Can I Possibly Do?

By Carol Kaufmann, July 1, 2008
I haven’t seen much of Burma these days. When Cyclone Nargis devastated the southern portion of the country May 2 and 3, journalists had to sneak into the devastated areas to report on conditions there, thanks to a paranoid government (who call this country Myanmar, by the way, even though the people are Burmese. But I digress). Bootleg video of destroyed villages showed people waiting for help. Their eyes looks vacant. Children roamed without parents. Coverage of Burma has nearly vanished, largely because of access, I’m sure, so we no longer see these faces. But I can’t stop thinking about them....Read More

Camp Unity

By Carl M. Cannon, June 28, 2008
After watching the television coverage yesterday and reading news accounts this morning of the Obama/Hillary Clinton love fest in the tiny town of Unity, New Hampshire, it occurs that I’m one of the few journalist following this campaign who had another association with the proper noun “Unity.” Let me tell you about it…...Read More

Return Volley

By Carl M. Cannon, June 26, 2008
Yesterday, Obama campaign manager David Plouffe fired a volley across the bow of the USS McCain in the form of a PowerPoint presentation to journalists in which he vowed that the Democratic presidential nominee would compete in every region of the country in the 2008 contest, no matter how solidly Republican those states have been in recent elections. Plouffe named six of these previously impregnable GOP strongholds: Alaska, Georgia, Indiana, Montana, North Carolina, and North Dakota. Well, less than 24 hours later, a decision by the Supreme Court showed just how difficult such a gambit can be…. ...Read More

Are You Prepared for an Emergency?

By Julie Bain, June 25, 2008
Floods in the Midwest destroy thousands of homes. A New Jersey family of four is struck by lightning while walking to their car during a Little League rain delay. Record heat causes power outages. A black bear climbs into a backyard hammock in New Jersey. Emergencies happen every day. Are you prepared?...Read More
