After reading about families going hungry in Pembroke Township, Illinois,
Pam Koner told her two daughters, "We have to do something." That "something" became
Family-to-Family, the not-for-profit relief program she founded in 2002 and oversees from her home in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York. Today, the program feeds more than 375 households in 13 communities. Donating families access the monthly shopping lists at
family-to-family.org, then buy and pack boxes for "their" families. "I call it living empathy," says Koner, who enlisted
FedEx as a corporate sponsor -- it ships every box for free.
