A growing number of American cities, including Portland, Denver, Baltimore, and Chattanooga, have come up with an enlightening way to help the homeless (and discourage panhandling).

The scheme is pretty simple: Drop your spare change into conveniently placed refurbished parking meters. The cities then give the money to housing and health care, among other things. Just remember that feeding these meters -- which are painted in vivid colors to distinguish them from the real thing -- won't get you out of that pesky parking ticket.
