While most the U.S. is not vegetarian (including myself) they may still be interested in knowing the unusual places that animals can show up.

1. Candy
Most people know that gelatin is made from animal byproducts. It is commonly made by boiling the bones and connective tissue of cattle or pigs. What they don't realize is how many different products it can show up in. Check out petakids.com for a list of candy without this additive and check labels if you want to avoid it.

2. Wine
Fining is a process of removing impurities from wine with a protein source. This can be gelatin, egg whites or the, so-called "Rolls Royce" of fining, Isinglass. Sounds lovely but it's actually made from the swim bladders of certain fish. Cheers!
See Vegan wine? Isn't it all vegan?

3. Cheese
Rennet is an enzyme traditionally from the stomach lining of a calf used to make cheese. The calf uses rennet to digest its mother's milk. Many vegetarian cheeses use a vegetable based substitute.

4. Lipstick
Some red food coloring comes from cochineal beetles. Yes, beetles. Read more on Snopes.com.

As Sean C. said 'It's actually nice to know that the rest of the animal is being put to a good use...' What's the difference between a t-bone steak and cow tongue? The tongue tastes a whole lot better! Yet lots of the animal is wasted because people are squeamish. Either eat the animal or be a vegetarian! At least let my dogs have the good stuff you try to throw away! But allas the government dictates much of the animal can't be sold like the brains or eyeballs.

It's actually nice to know that the rest of the animal is being put to a good use and not wasted. Let them eat candy! With lipstick smeared all over they're drnken faces!!! But for those sodding vegetarians, this does seem like an unfortunate twist of fortune. This world seems like a too hostile place for that species...

A vegan, my boyfriend is not. But thanks to your heads up on lips, Wearing a lipstick that's got Crushed up beetles in it, He flips Out each time he gives me a kiss; Even though the brand that I wear Doesn't declare any of this Cochineal beetle in there. He's worried that other bugs may Be lurking somewhere in the gloss. Who knows the names the labels say? His fret is my romantic loss. Is it because I have bad breath? No. No. It's the kiss of bug death!

This info is necessary for any vegetarian. I have such a hard time finding things that don't have animal by-products mixed into them. It's completely unbelievable that wine would be anywhere near this list. That's disgusting! And scary. Thanks for the post. :)
