As an audiobook fan, I rely on Audible for my daily commuting fix. They’re not paying me to say this, by the way. I just happen to love Audible. I can’t help it. I have a subscription for a book a month. This means that I regularly get a new credit. When my supply of books starts running low, I visit Audible and collect my credits. I pick a book or two and add them to my cart. A minute later, those books start downloading to my computer. A couple of minutes after that, they’re on my iPhone, ready for the trip to work. (I could get the Audible app and bypass the computer, but I’m perfectly happy doing it this way.) When I get in the car the next morning, I plug the iPhone into the car (one of the nice features of newer cars) and the books start playing and I am a happy commuter. (You know, maybe Audible should pay me for this…)

Whenever you get into a habit like this, relying on some faceless corporation to improve your life, sooner or later you start wondering what it’s like at that faceless corporation. Thanks to Mediabistro, I now know what it’s like at Audible. In their guided video tour, you see the company’s headquarters in Newark (a city close to my heart, as their high schools are heavily into debate, and I am a debate coach on the side). You see their offices, their cafeteria, their conference rooms (with nifty electronic calendar gate keeping), and, of course, the recording studios. And in the end, aside from wishing that your office also had all those free snacks, you feel like you’ve learned something about the audiobook business. In a way it’s a puff piece, but it’s so interesting that you don’t care.
