A cold chisel is an all-steel tool with a specially tempered blade for cutting metal.
Struck with a hammer, a cold chisel can cut sheet metal, remove plaster, or chop off
rivets, bolts, and nails.
Using a Cold Chisel
To remove a rivet with a cold chisel, place the cutting edge of the chisel against the
head of the rivet, and strike the chisel with a hammer. Several sharp blows may be
necessary. The smaller the chisel's width, the more focused will be the impact. Therefore,
use the smallest cold chisel that suits the task.
To remove a large rivet, split the head first with a wide cold chisel or with a hacksaw.
Purchasing
The blades of cold chisels range in width from 1/4 to 1 inch, in 1/8-inch increments.
Overall lengths vary from 5 to 8-1/4 inches. A 3/8- and a 3/4-inch chisel should meet
most home shop needs. Some cold chisels have vinyl grips to absorb shock - this feature
helps protect your hand from the sting of hammer blows.
