This tool gives you a choice of two different ends of the same size with which to loosen
or tighten a nut or bolt. Use the box (or closed) end when the job calls for strength,
and the faster-to-use open end when less turning force is needed. In a confined space,
these wrenches are typically easier to use than adjustable wrenches. Match your wrench to
the size of the nut or bolt-if you use a wrench that's "almost right," it might slip and
damage the hardware. Avoid overtightening a nut, which could damage the bolt.
Purchasing
Combination wrenches are available singly and in sets, in English and metric sizes. They
typically range from 1/4 to 1-1/4 inches (7 to 22 millimeters).

Combination open-end box wrench
Substitutes
An alternative to the combination wrench is a ratchet box wrench. This box wrench has a
ratcheting mechanism inside each head. The ratchet grips when it's pulled, which turns
the bolt, and releases when it's pushed, so you can reposition the handle without
repositioning the head. Ratchet box wrenches are available in a variety of sizes, listed
by the size of the nut that the jaws accept.
Another alternative to the combination wrench is an adjustable wrench.
