As the new editor of Reader’s Digest, I’d like to issue an invitation: Talk to me! Thousands of you already do, of course -- and we read every letter and e-mail. (A special thank-you to those who have written in praise of our new look. We’re glad you like it.) But now we’re making it even easier for you to join the conversation. On the new rd.com, you can comment and vote on your favorite real-life dramas, nominate people whose good works inspire you in “Make Your Mark,” and share family-friendly jokes and photos. I hope you’ll also join our Powerhouse Panel, where your survey answers will help us plan future issues (sign up at ReadersDigestPowerhouse.com).

You’ll notice some changes in this issue as we continue to explore fresh ways to showcase the best ideas in the world today. In our new section, The Digest, you’ll get insider information on such diverse subjects as car repair and airport security, plus sneak peeks into this month’s notable books. With our new 4 Ways of Looking… feature—this month, on smart uses for bicycles from Brooklyn to Botswana—we open a window on our increasingly connected world. And because we know you want to stay current without necessarily going back to college, we’ve started a new feature called Quick Study, which gives you, well, “the Reader’s Digest version” of a news topic in four quick pages.

I’m serious when I say “talk to me,” so we’ve created a special area on rd.com for you to share your story ideas and even your gripes directly with me—meanwhile, thank you for being part of our community of wonderful readers.

One day, a father was driving with his three daughters. The oldest piped up from the backseat and said, “Daddy, why is my name Rose?”

The father replied, “Because when you were born, a rose petal fell on your cheek.”

A few minutes later the middle daughter asked, “Daddy, why is my name Lily?”

The father responded, “Because when you were born, a lily petal fell on your cheek.” Then a few minutes later the third daughter said, “Ararrraaara!”

“Shut up, Cinderblock!”
