1. Spread grass seed and other lawn products
uniformly, quickly and efficiently using a broadcast
spreader.

2. Close the flow lever and
dial in the recommended spread rate for the product you’re using before
filling the hopper. The higher the gauge setting, the larger the hole size in
the hopper—resulting in a faster material flow rate. Whenever
you’re loading lawn products into the spreader, place the machine on a
sidewalk or driveway to avoid having material spills saturate one spot on your
lawn and kill it.

3. Measure the spreader’s dispersal pattern
for each new lawn product. Place the spreader at the front edge of a 12-ft.
Wide by 20-ft. long swept-off section of your driveway. Make sure the flow
lever is closed, fill the hopper, then open the flow lever and push the
spreader for three paces of your normal walking speed. Close the lever, take
one more stride before stopping the spreader and measure both the total width
of the resultant dispersal pattern and the total width of each side. Sweep up
the test material and put it back in the bag or hopper.

4. Keep the impeller running as parallel to the
ground as possible and maintain at least a two-thirds full load in the hopper
when running the spreader across slopes and rough terrain. A level impeller
ensures an accurate throwing pattern, while a full hopper acts as ballast to
prevent the spreader’s drive wheel from lifting or “skipping”
across the ground. Skipping makes the impeller throw product in an erratic
manner.
