2. We have some fantastic customers and some who are just terrible. But I'll deliver to them all—this is what I do.
3. Many delivery drivers are teenage boys, and most parents don't like their teenage boys driving around at night in downpours or blizzards. Yet these same people have no qualms about having other teenage kids deliver their pizza in these conditions.
4. There are always "special customers," like the little old lady who wants to pay her bill with a $5 check. I’ll take it because none of us want to be mean to a grandmother. But if she hasn't ordered from us before, I won’t take it.
5. We act like we really want to have a conversation with you at your door, but we don't, unless we know you. Basically, we just want to get the delivery over with.
6. I can reel off the addresses of all the customers who don't tip. (Yes, we remember!) I also know all the good tippers and will treat them and their food accordingly.
7. I will try to be as nice to you as possible. But if you complain that I'm late, or if you have a problem with your order, I won’t be so nice.
8. The majority of our employees work 12-14 hours a day. At the end of the day, we just want to go home. So please don't call for a delivery at closing time and then complain that we can't accommodate you.
9. At our shop, we use our own cars to deliver pizza. Last week one of our guys smashed his car into a pole on an icy road. Now he's using a rental car.
10. I'm one of the easiest people to get along with. But if you're rude to me, I have no problem going toe-to-toe with you.
11. Don't jump in the shower right after you order pizza and then not the answer the door. I can't wait much longer than a few minutes.
12. If you live across the street, please don’t call for a delivery. Get off your rear end and pick up the pizza yourself.
13. I probably break a speeding law once a day.
14. After I leave this job, I'm sure I won’t be able to eat pizza for at least a year.
15. The majority of customers who stand there chatting about the weather are just trying to make up for not giving us tips.
16. You ordered the pizza. You know how much it costs. Please have your money (and tip) ready when you answer the door.
17. I don't have the authority to give you a discount. Really, I don't. I'm just the delivery guy.

Instead of a taxi next time go to a pizza store and order a pizza to be delivered to your house. Then ask the driver for a lift home. Pay for the pizza and a decent tip and it is still cheaper then a taxi fare and you have dinner as well.
Yes, definitely tip the driver. Remember, like waiters, they get paid based on minimum wage and tips, and pay taxes on estimated tips. So when you don't tip, it actually costs them money to serve you. I disagree with "12. If you live across the street, please don’t call for a delivery". There are reasons why room service exists and they apply to next door deliveries as well...injuries, watching children, working/conferencing, etc... If the tip is there, what difference is it?
"Mike" if you can't afford the tip, don't get it delivered, talk about just rude. I'll gladly tip $5 for a $12 pizza. A large pizza will feed 3-4, you'll spend more at any fast food place, and if you want to save money, pick it up, or Digorno it!
Look, normally, I'm a decent tipper. This used to be true of pizza delivery as well. Lately, though, I don't tip delivery drivers from major chains very well. Here's the deal. I'm ordering a $10-$15 pizza. The chain is tacking a $1.50 - $2.00 delivery fee on me. Then you want another $2 - $3 tip for delivering it? No, sorry, but I'm not paying 50% more for my pizza just to have it delivered. And for the record, yes, I have expressed this sentiment to both Domino's and Papa John's.
The $1.00-$2.00 is a pity prize for the delivery driver who get stiffed by the customers. Look at it this way, you're paying the extra money so YOU don't have to drive out to the store to get your pizza. Nobody would be delivering your pizza if tipping didn't happen. Most of the community tips, I guarantee if you always stiff the driver, when your address appears on the monitor, drivers will wait as long as possible until something near there pops up. You will get food faster with tip.
fyi - the included delivery charge is to cover the driver for gas, and in all reality they don't even see all of that, the store still keeps some of it. so you shouldn't really think of it as an included tip.
Pizza is way to expensive to just throw away money like that. Times are hard and you should pinch every dollar you can manage. As for the delivery drivers who are saying, woe is me. Like Ronzander said, it's your job! Plus there is already a delivery fee added to the bill. So, in actuality I'm paying for your service to be delivered to my door twice with a tip. Songbird, you're an idiot. You're going to tip someone more than the price that you paid and on top of that you don't have an oven. WOW
Not everybody has good paying jobs. For most of us, this is our 2nd job to support our family and feed our kids. We make minimum wage and use our own cars to deliver. We have extra expenses for car maintenance. We rely on tips. WE ARE NOT WHINERS! Why do people tip waiters and not us? We bring your food to your house and we are more exposed to more hazzards on the road. If you can afford to pay $20 for pizzas, why can't you afford to tip $2?
There's almost always one thing you can do to guarantee that you're going to get some kind of tip this or the next time you see them: If their bill is like $15.18, just keep some extra change to help them with the $0.18. A surprising amount of people will just give you the extra dollar they were going to spend in addition to your regular tip since they don't have to get back even MORE change. If not that, a lot of times they'll repay you at least the next time you see them. It's not a bad idea.
I have not seen so many whiners in my life. If you can't live on what they pay, then GET A REAL JOB! If a pizza shop can't find idiots to take advantage of, they will increase their wages. Simple economics tells you that, but I doubt any of the professional pizza delivery drivers complaining here about bad tippers etc, will ever be doing anything productive their whole lives. Don't hold your hand out if I pay a delivery fee, because delivering IS YOUR JOB. No one tips me at my job, so shut up!
i usually don't tip a lot of $ because i don't have a lot, i can't go buy a frozen pizza and cook it cause' my oven doesn't work and i can't pick up my pizza because i have no car, however when i have extra money, i tip alot! the other day i gave the delivery guy a $25 tip on an $18 bill, i almost never have the same pizza guy and they are always awesome to me, i some times i can only give $2-3 and sometimes i give a very large tip, depends on if i have extra money, hey we all have bills to pay!
To clarify my comment below, I meant to add a few dollars to the tip you usually give them (sorry for the vagueness of that comment). Also, keep the little ones away from the door when the delivery person comes in. It causes confusion and can lead to an preventable accident if the child is over excited.
As a single mom whose only transportation is the bus, I want to let all the delivery people out there know I think you are great. When I come home and am dog tired and in no mood for cooking it's you guys who come in to save my day. I would like to add to the suggestions though - If your delivery is made in bad weather (cold, rain, heat) add a few dollars and thank the person delivering to your door. It courtesy and they do appreciate it.
ok so i am not a pizza delivery guy but i am a sandwich delivery guy and some not all of these things are true i remember the tippers and the non tippers and i treat them accordingly
we all remember the tippers and non tippers..oh so well! i'm just as quick to the non tippers as i am with the tippers, hurry up back for the next orders..time is money delivering pizza..we can not stand non tippers, ppl who wait to write the checks out when we get there,or take forever to answer the door-at least answer the door and tell us to hold on while you take 5 more mins to find the exact change-while it's raining or 100 degrees outside(texas).most times it's not our faults for late ordr
i make min wage plus tips plus $1.40 per delivery(gas reimbursement-delivery charge) at the moment...on a bad night i avg about 13-15/hr all the way up in the low 20s/hr including hourly pay...it's not great but it's not bad for a min wage type job- but we do put wear n tear on our vehicles and no insurance(unless we pay for it outside of work). it pays the bills and also a good job while going to school if one decides to finish college or what not. DIGORNO'S FOR NON TIPPERS!!!
First we need to add that having pizza delivered is a privalige not a right. I managed a pizza place for five years and actually had a woman call every fifteen minutes after she ordered asking the where abouts of her pizza.. Then after i'd had enough and refused to send out her order she threaten to call the police. THere is no law that says once you place an order they have to deliever it.
The other sad thing about the kid being at the door, knowing your not going to get a decent tip is... they are also training the next generation of bad tippers. Don't teach your kids that it's ok to not tip. We have families to feed to, and the 15 cents you didn't make us go to the car to get is not a tip, it doesn't put food in our kid's mouths. Our kids eat cold pizza for breakfast because we couldn't buy cereal because you couldn't pry open your wallet for a couple more bucks.
I read this article first in Reader's Digest. I was a pizza delivery driver for three years after high school, and it looks like some things never change. The article is dead-on accurate. I especially love the one about the richer the neighborhood, the significantly lesser likelyhood of a tip if at all (usually no tip at all). I remember playing ro-sham-bo with my fellow drivers. Whoever lost, had to take the "rich" delivery. Middle-income and poorer were definitely the most generous.
Gee, Pimple, I mean Gimple. You've got me shaking in my pizza shoes. FYI, I've worked in several pizzerias and the owner works from before opening to after closing every day. You need to do a little research before demonstrating what an idiot you are. If it's so lucrative, why don't you open one? Let me guess - you are an unhappy, hourly paid employee with your name printed above your shirt pocket with the IQ of a retarded amoeba. We all work hard to try to satisfy jerks like you, but to no avail
