If you have upholstered chair seats that are stained, worn out or just plain ugly, there’s no need to call a pro. You can do a first-class upholstery job yourself, even if you have zero experience. Don’t worry about making mistakes; you can correct them by prying out staples and starting over.

1. Cut the foam about 1/2 in. larger than the wood seat.Cut the batting at least 2 in. larger and the fabric atleast 3 in. larger.

2. Staple the fabric at the middle of each side and worktoward the corners, stretching the fabric as you go. Stopabout 2 in. from corners and leave the corners for last.

3. Create gathers in the fabric to form a smooth curvearound curved corners. Work toward the corner fromalternating sides. Then pull back the “ear” of fabric andstaple it.

4. Fold fabric around square corners. If your seat hassquare corners toward the rear, fold the fabric againstthe back edge of the seat, where the crease will be hiddenby the chair’s back.
