Metal Gutter Repair

How to attach gutter hangers and fix an overflowing valley gutter.

If your metal gutters have developed a middle-age sag, it’s time for a little tummy tuck. You’ll find some version of a gutter support bracket that’ll work on your gutters to lift the low spots. It’ll help drain water better and help keep debris from accumulating.

The style shown, made by Amerimax Home Products (800-776-8629, www.amerimax.com), is very easy to install and costs about $1 each. Another style of gutter hanger slides under the shingles and is nailed to the roof under the shingles. But test-bend your shingles first. Older shingles can be brittle and could break off when you lift them for the installation.

Rx For Overflowing Valley Gutters
If rainwater cascading down your roof valley causes a waterfall that washes out the petunias every time it storms, install a splash guard. It takes about 20 minutes to complete. You can find these precut splash guards (about $3) in both brown and white aluminum at a home center, but you could easily make your own out of aluminum or sheet metal and spray-paint them to match your gutters. If you don’t own a Pop riveter, attach the guards with 1/2-in. sheet metal screws instead.

1. Hook the gutter hanger under the front edge of the gutter and over the back edge. Then drive the hex head screw through the wood trim behind the gutter. The hangers will be stronger if you screw them into a rafter. Look for nailheads, which indicate rafter locations. Add new gutter hangers about every 3 ft. along the entire length of the gutters if the old ones have let go.

2. Drill 1/8-in. holes through both the splash guard and the gutter.

CAUTION:
Keep yourself and your ladder well away from electrical power lines.

3. Press the head of a 1/8-in. rivet into each hole. Place the Pop rivet tool over the shaft of the rivet and squeeze the handle once or twice to compress the rivet and break off the stem.
