• Ask for demos or cars bought at auction That way you may get a price closer to what the car cost the dealership (found on Edmunds.com or the Kelley Blue Book site, kbb.com). Trade-ins are costlier for the dealer, so you'll pay more too.
  
  
• Check how long it's been there Stickers on the windshield may give this away, or cruise the lot often. If a car's been there a month or more the dealer may have several, or it's not in high demand, meaning there's more room for negotiation.
