Can Water Purifiers Be Unhealthy?

Replace filter cartridges in reverse osmosis water purifiers

Q  A family I know has been sick for two years. Their illness was eventually traced to a contaminated reverse osmosis water purifier. What steps should be taken to prevent that from happening? Does a water purifier require any maintenance other than just changing the filter cartridges?

A  Yes! Bacteria can multiply to unsafe levels inside a water purifier, even if you have chlorinated city water. When new filter cartridges are installed, even your hands can contaminate new cartridges. It's important to follow the manufacturer's replacement schedule and sanitizing directions for cartridges. Manufacturers usually recommend flushing the system with either a hydrogen peroxide or bleach mixture to purify all canisters, tanks and hoses whenever you change filter cartridges. The exact steps you should take depend on the type of system you have. You'll have to look over your owner's manual to determine how to go about the purifying process. If you go on vacation for more than a couple of weeks, remove the cartridge and store it in the refrigerator until you get back. That'll keep bacteria from building a well-populated city while you're away.
