Decorating the Eggs

These are only some of the possible ways to decorate eggs. With a little imagination, you can easily create your own designs.

Red Glitter Egg
1. Apply 2 coats of red paint to the egg and allow the paint to dry thoroughly.

2. Coat the blunt half of the egg with glue and sprinkle it with red glitter. Carefully balance the egg in the dimple of an egg carton or in an eggcup and allow it to dry.

3. Repeat step 2 with the other half of the egg, making sure you leave a 1/4-inch band around the middle of the egg free from glue.

4. Brush the center strip with glue. Place the ribbon or braid around the egg and press it gently but firmly into position. Allow it to dry.

Dried-Flower Egg
1. Apply 2 coats of pale green paint to the egg and allow it to dry thoroughly.

2. Using a fine brush, carefully dab a little glue onto the backs of the dried flowers.

3. Using tweezers to pick up the flowers, arrange them on the egg and gently press them into place.

4. Tie the ribbon in a bow and glue it in position. Coat the entire surface with the clear varnish.

Découpage-Style Egg
1. Apply 2 coats of pink paint to the egg and allow it to dry thoroughly.

2. Cut out a section of small pictures from wrapping paper or books. Choose images printed on thin paper -- they are easier to mold around the egg and will give a smoother surface.

3. Apply glue liberally to the wrong sides of the shapes and press them onto the egg, smoothing out any air bubbles or lumps of glue. Wipe away any excess glue. Allow the glue to dry.

4. Seal the egg by applying 2 or 3 coats of clear varnish.

Beaded Egg
1. Apply 2 coats of paint to the egg and allow it to dry thoroughly.

2. With a very fine paintbrush, dab glue onto beads and sequins on the egg with tweezers. Allow the glue to dry.

3. Seal the egg with 2 or 3 coats of clear varnish.

Icing Flower Egg
Follow the steps for decorating the beaded egg but use cake decorations instead of beads.

Stenciled Egg
1. Brush the undersides of small flowers, leaves, grasses or fabric cutouts with egg white and arrange them on the egg, pressing the coated sides onto the surface of the egg.

2. Carefully slip the egg into a stocking and tie up the stocking tightly enough to hold the decorations in place.

3. Immerse the egg in a dye bath for the time stated in the manufacturer's instructions.

4. Leave the egg in the stocking and hang it up to dry. Remove the egg just before the stocking is quite dry and carefully peel off the decorations.

5. When the egg is completely dry, rub it with linseed oil or coat it with varnish to give a shiny effect.

Variation
You can decorate eggs very simply using a batik technique. Draw a design in crayon or candle wax on the egg before immersing it in the dye. The area covered with crayon or wax will resist the dye.
