My dad was a general contractor in the summer, when he wasn’t teaching school. One year a bad storm hit and a lot of roofs needed replacing. One homeowner consulted with Dad about replacing the roof himself, so Dad showed the guy how to lay down the felt and put on shingles.

A few weeks later, Dad stopped by and the guy proudly showed off his new roof. Dad discovered that the homeowner had started laying the shingles at the top of the roof instead of the bottom, and all the shingles were pointing bottom side up and overlapping the wrong way. The shingles would scoop rather than shed any rain!

Luckily, after Dad showed the homeowner the problem, they were able to tear off and reroof the house before another rain.
