Q When we’re in our basement, we can’t hear the front door chimes. Since our basement is finished, we can’t run a wire from the existing chimes to the basement. Is there a simpler way to provide another set of chimes in the basement?

Robert J. Luff, Colorado Springs, CO

A If you don’t want to (or can’t) run a wire, try a wireless chime extender. It consists of a sound-activated transmitter (Photo 2) mounted beside your existing doorbell chimes, and a remote set of chimes (Photo 1) plugged into an outlet in the basement (or elsewhere). When activated, the transmitter sends a signal to the remote chimes. The existing and wireless chimes will both sound when someone presses the doorbell. The system costs $25 and up at home centers and hardware stores.

1. Plug in the doorbell chimes.

2. Mount the transmitter next to your existing doorbell chimes.
