Q Our satellite dish installer simply set the dish on top of the roof and screwed it down through the shingles. Will the roof leak now?

Kyle Robson, Centreville, VA

A We checked with several roofers and satellite dish companies and they all said the same thing - you shouldn't have a leaky roof. Installers typically take precautions against leaks by applying a silicone sealant to the holes when inserting the fasteners. If they later remove a dish, they fill the holes with sealant.

However, it's possible that wind could loosen the dish slightly and cause a small leak. If you see a water stain on the ceiling, apply a bead of sealant around screw heads and around the flanges on the dish using an exterior-grade polyurethane or silicone sealant.
