Look what has happened to the traditional chocolate chip cookie! This one has only half the fat of the original, plus old-fashioned oats that give a fiber boost. Yet all of this trimming has not slimmed down the flavor. These cookies will still vanish just as fast!

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup old-fashioned oats 4 tablespoons margarine 2/3 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1 large egg 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla 1/3 cup reduced-fat sour cream 3/4 cup semisweet chocolate chips

How to make it   35 minutes

  • 1

Preheat oven to 375ºF. Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper. Whisk flour, baking soda, and salt in medium bowl. Stir in oats.

  • 2

Cream margarine, brown sugar, and granulated sugar in large bowl with electric mixer at high speed until well blended. Add egg and vanilla and beat until light yellow and creamy, about 3 minutes. Blend in sour cream with wooden spoon, then flour mixture all at once, just until combined (don’t overmix or the cookies may become tough). Stir in chocolate chips.

  • 3

Drop dough by heaping teaspoonfuls 2 inches apart onto baking sheets. Bake cookies until golden, about 10 minutes. Cool on baking sheets 2 minutes, then transfer to wire racks and cool completely. Store in airtight container for up to 2 weeks or freeze for up to 3 months.

Health Hint
Eating soluble oat fiber every day may lower total cholesterol, which decreases the risk of heart disease. Research suggests that fiber helps remove cholesterol from the digestive system, preventing it from entering the bloodstream. The antioxidant compounds in oats also protect against heart disease by preventing free radicals from damaging cholesterol levels.

Secret to Success
By using only half the fat and margarine instead of butter, you’ve significantly cut the saturated fat. The reduced-fat sour cream also helps to keep the melt-in-your-mouth taste high and the fat low. Old-fashioned oats add an extra helping of heart-healthy goodness.

Way Back When
That first chocolate chip cookie was baked in a 1709 tollhouse, known to the neighbors as the Toll House Inn. In the 1930s, as the story goes, owner Mrs. Ruth Wakefield was experimenting with an old American cookie recipe of butter drop-do’s. She decided to chop up a chocolate bar and throw it into the dough. Much to her amazement, the chocolate didn’t melt in the oven, but remained as small bites of chocolate when baked. Little did she know that she had just created one of America’s most loved cookies! (Source: The Encyclopedia of American Food and Drink, by John F. Mariani, Lebhar-Friedman Books, NY, 1999)
