This time of year, hot chocolate and eggnog are everywhere. Spice up your holiday with these hot drinks:
Combine ½ cup gingerroot (sliced with a vegetable peeler and tightly packed), 4 sticks cinnamon, 16 whole cloves, 1 tbs. powdered cardamom, 1 tbsp. vanilla extract, 1 tsp. nutmeg, ¼ cup sugar and a cup of honey. Add 8 cups boiling water and 12 Darjeeling tea bags. Simmer for 5 minutes. Add a cup of rum; strain. Add 8 cups hot milk, and top with whipped cream, if desired. Serves 12.
Combine 4 cups dry red wine, ½ cup sugar, ½ cup brandy or cognac, 1 cinnamon stick, ¼ tsp. ground cloves, 1/8 tsp. ground allspice, 1/8 tsp. salt, 1 orange (sliced thin) and ½ lemon (sliced thin) in a pot over low heat. Bring to a simmer; let sit for at least 1 hour. Serves 8.
