This MD brings new meaning to the term "house call."

from Reader's Digest Magazine | May 2004

Wendy Ring, MD, hits the roads of rural Northern California four days a week to treat people who have no health care: immigrants, teens, the elderly, homeless and others. She makes rounds in one of two custom-built motor homes outfitted with exam rooms, a lab and pharmacy. In 1990 she started out with her own savings and donated equipment, driving an old pickup and towing a 24-foot trailer that she converted to a clinic. “I was trying to meet the needs of people who didn’t have access to medicine,” says Ring. While the program has grown, her approach hasn’t changed. “We’re people’s family doctors,” says Ring. “We don’t turn anyone away.”
