    digest diet.
Hi, my name is Felisha.  I got your readers digest diet book.  And was a little unclear of exactly how much coconut oil we should be eating?  Can you please clarify?

  • Commercialmsgs

Why can’t you print the shopping list without joining some sort of Acrobat Reader Meeting Group?

    • Commercialmsgs

I figured it out…I was choosing the wrong icon

      • Laurieannquilty

Can you help me figure it out?

    • sandy

I agree on this one. I can’t believe that I bought the book and it isn’t there. what is up with that.. I would have rather had that than the two booklets that were included.

How many grams of sugar is in the shake?  What if I can’t find coconut milk?  Is skim okay, or maybe alomond milk?  Where do I find tahini?

    • Melissa

Hi Cheryl – did you find coconut milk? I finally did, there are 2 types – in the carton and in a can.  If you go to like the Thai food section of the grocery store you can find light coconut milk in a can.  And tahini at my grocery store is in with the Peanut Butter.  I made a mixed berry and tahini shake for dinner the other night – it was actually really good.

    • Anonymous

How many grams of nartural sugar will depend on which fruit you use. Strawberries are a low-sugar/carb fruit; grapes are high, but quantities are adjusted somewhat accordingly, from what I can see. If you’re asking for diabetic purposes, you need to be counting all carbs, subtracting the fiber, which does not turn to glucose in your system. (I’ve been a type 1 diabetic for fourteen years.)

    • Robinwaterbird

The book says you can substitute certain milks interchangeably.  If not light/unsweetened almond milk, then light coconut.  Usually can find tahini where they have hummus as it’s an ingredient of product.  It can also be found in kosher aisle sometimes.  We wanted taste of coconut milk but couldn’t find the lite coconut milk where we are so we took coconut water and put a smig of that to the unsweetened almond milk.  I don’t know if that’s cheating nutrition wise but after two days of intense reading, cooking, shopping between 3 households (team effort to cut down cost and motivate), it seemed better to concentrate on excercise than worry about 1/4 cup of coconut water diluted. There are great sections of book that are supportive to special dietary needs and those people are going to be asking doctor for advise/support. I think if you look at the nutrition breakdown on ingredients boxes, you would get a good idea of sugar grams but I’m not a nutritionist just being supportive. :)

The recipe for lemony lentil & chard soup HAS to be printed WRONG! There is no liquid other than the lemon juice. I followed it exactly as printed and almost burnt the whole thing. Caught just in time ended up adding a lot of water to it. Anyone else have this problem?

    • Fallbillo

      Hi Dam,

I noticed that there was no liquid on the lemony lentil & chard soup but what I did
was I followed the instruction on the lentil box to figure out how much liquid I needed, and then I followed the rest of the recipe. I guess that since we only can get 2 cups of soup anyway, you can’t go wrong.

Hope this was a little help!!!!

      • Amore

Hi Dam and Fallbillo, I realize your posts and others are 5 months ago but I’m wondering if you and others ever found that the recipe in question DOES say to “add 7 cups of water..” in the directions ?   In the #3 part of directions.
I wonder if your books are a misprint. Anyway, if you all choose to make this recipe again, it’s 7 cups of water.  :)
I hope I helped you all out.

        • robin

my book did not call for any water in the recipe for the Lemony lentil soup either…..thanks for letting me know!

Thank you!  I just got my digest diet book and have been reading the recipes to decide which soup recipe to shop for and I completely agree!  I’ve done a lot of recipe development in my career and there is definitely an omission.  Since the recipe makes 12 cups, I’m going to buy 2 quarts of low sodium chicken stock and I think I will need 6-8 cups of it.

      • Gloria Barton

I’m making mine right now.  I added a quart of fat free chicken stock to it.  I figure that since it’s used in the Chickpea recipe, it will be fine to use in this one.  I added the whole quarter as the chickpeas were canned and drained. This calls for lentils but does not stipulate if it should be dried or canned.  I’m using dried, so another reason to add more liquid.

    • Dturnidge

Yes, this is wrong.  What is the correct recipe?

    • Kathy

I’m making the soup now – I used the 1 cup of chicken stock left over from the box from the ChickPea Kale soup – very good – pour the hot soup over the feta cheese and it melts right into it.  Anyway  – opened new box (3 cups of stock) plus the 1 cup  and I added 3 cups of water – that gives me 7 cups of  liquid plus the 2 cups of lentils and 8 cups of chopped chard (which will cook down)  - the stems and the onions , dried tomato and garlic might add up  the 12 cups the recipe is supposed to yield. It’s simmering now – will see how much it makes – if too thick will add another cup of water.  Started diet on Monday – 3 pounds down this morning so I’m going to continue and hope for good results.

      • Melissa

Congrats Kathy! I started the diet 3 days ago, on Sunday.  I’m down 6 lbs! I haven’t made the lentil soup as I’ve read all about how there is no liquid.  But the Spicy Mex Chicken soup was good and I have the Chickpea Kale soup which I have to agree with you is very good! Congrats on the 3 lbs! I haven’t found much rhyme or reason to this website yet – is there some place you go to actually see “forums/discussion groups”?

      • Herculesthecat1935

Kathy, I am starting on Feb 1st .  How are you doing now?

    • Cecille

I would like t suggest that you add water as much as you think necessary to make it a soup

    • Isa

yes, I added 4 cups of chicken broth and three cups of water. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

    • Isa

    • Kcbruner50

Yes.  I had this same problem but caught it before I added the greens.  What was going to wilt the greens?  NOTHING.  Where was the liquid to come from for the lentils?  I added about 6 cups low sodium, FF chicken broth and about 4 cups of water. Turned out pretty good after that.

    • Darcey

I did the same thing. Having never used chard before, I thought perhaps it had a lot of water content and would cook down into a liquid…….duh me! But seeing no liquid in the recipe, and having to do a phone interview while it cooked and worrying it might burn, I turned it pretty low. When I went to check, it was obvious it needed liquid. So I looked at one of the other recipes and used what was suggested for that and also what would match the photo of the soup. So I added about 4-5 cups. Since the ingredients hadn’t had time to flavor the water, I also added a can of the no salt added diced tomatoes. The soup was yummy!

I am disturbed that there are so many comments/questions here that are never addressed by the publisher. I understand that first printings have errors, but for something like this diet that is so ingredient specific, these questions should be being addressed in a timely manner. I don’t see them being addressed at all, other than by others of us who are stumbling along. That said, I am sticking with the diet. I’ve lost 6 pounds and am on Day 7.

Why is the book so big?  A spiral binding would make it much more user-friendly, especially when using recipes.  The food photos are beautiful.  I’m eager to get started, but the shopping lists aren’t very user-friendly, either.  I still have to pick the soups and write in all of those ingredients.  Also, it makes more sense to organize the shopping list by grocery department – produce, dairy, etc.

  • Chipsahoy

First day – unclear about how much and what kind of ricotta cheese.  Book states to top each quarter with 2 tbsp. fat-free ricotta cheese.  That seems like too much.  The shopping list had part-skim ricotta listed which is what I bought not fat free.  Looking ahead at tomorrows snack leads me to believe there should only be a total of 2 tbsp. not 8.  Thoughts??

    • Docotay

I’m not sure the book was proof-read thoroughly.  I’ve had to guess at a lot of things.  The shakes called for 3/4 cup nonfat yogurt-didn’t specify plain yogurt.  Spent a lot of money of 6 oz cups of Yoplait Light in different flavors before I figured it out it was supposed to be plain yogurt.  I was also confused by the above ricotta cheese incident.  They keep mentioning 0%Greek Yogurt.  Guessing that means 0% fat???    I like the diet and have lost 5 pounds in the first 6 days, but lots of days I’m not sure I’m doing things like I’m supposed to.

      • metrush

0% Greek yogurt does mean nonfat.  Plain Greek yogurt has more protein in it than “regular” plain yogurt.  Chobani brand is a good choice, and it is available in a large container as well as the smaller individual serving size.  I am using it in my shakes instead of the regular nonfat yogurt because I already have some in the fridge.  Hope is doesn’t mess up my calorie/nutrition count!

  • Judy Angelo

Hi my name is Judy I just purchased my copy of readersdigest diet book and have read the entire book before I start on the diet.  I noticed that peaches were not on the diet andI live in georgia so peaches are very popular here I would like to know if they can be used ?  I am really looking forward to starting the diet.

  • Marcy_aguirre

I also just got the Digest Diet Book and very anxious to start…..re: Lemony Lentil & Chard Soup recipe.  No liquid is listed.  Please clarify what and amount to use.

  • Lindaeludwig

Hi, my name is Linda and Today is day 1 of my diet.  I would like to make the the Lemony Lentil &Chard Soup but it doesn’t say how much liqiud to add to the soup to have enough for the first4 days of the diet and have 4 cups left over.  Am I suppose to add water or chicken broth?

  • Heyshorty

The Lemony Lentil & Chard Soup!!!! Missing how much water you should add……fyi

You do not make it easy to follow in the book or the shopping lists.  It’s easier for me to read the daily menu suggestions and make my own shopping list.  This book is so full of fillers it is a chore to read it.  Why do you think you have to keep selling and selling and selling.  I bought the book, didn’t I?  No, I haven’t started the diet yet, but I will.  If it works I may recommend it, but I won’t recommend your book since it is a time-waster.

  • Duckschick

I have extra soup from days 1-4… can I eat those during the next phase for Lunch or something?  I don’t think my kids will eat it!

My comment disappeared… so if this is a double post I’m sorry!  I have more soup from days 1-4… can I use those for a meal in the next phase?

Where is the suggested shopping lists for days 5-14 and 15-21? I can only pull up days 1-4

  • Jgreene

Some of the stuff you need is hard to find. The 300lb people in the book that are bragging about loosing 8-9 lbs, come back when you’ve stuck with it and lost the 80 or 90 plus that you need to lose.

  • L Laura83

I am confused about the snacks.  The book says to choose a crunchy snack like nuts, but he shopping list does not list nuts for days 1-4

  • Julie

Can another type of milk (skim milk or soy milk) be used instead of coconut milk?

  • ML Jones

On-line shopping lists are WONDERFUL, but they  could be even better if they were in PDF format.  That would allow us to enter our tailorings write on the form BEFORE printing it out.  (It would also still protect your copyright, because they could not be saved to the computer.)  Love your book – mine is peppered with paperclips to get me to the right pages for the section I’m in at the moment.  I envision cycling between phases two and three for a while to reach my weight loss goals.  Thank you for giving me hope again!   – Mary

    • Dr. C

I used Almond Breeze almond milk

  • Apgood

Have not received my book yet, but I’ve noticed that coconut oil and coconut milk are mentioned quite a bit.  I absolutely DETEST coconut flavor–what can I substitute in the recipes that call  for that?

  • wanda avary

What can i substitute for the escarole in the shrimp soup?

    • Barck44

No one has answered the question as to skim verses coconut milk……Just starting and need to shop tomorrow.

      • Darcey

For everyone having difficulty finding stuff [I did, too], just ask the manager at your grocery store and/or health food store. I let my fingers do the walking and called before I started out. Coconut milk was easy to fine once I knew to look in the ethnic/oriental foods department. Ethnic food aisles have food much cheaper than health food aisles, by the way. Lite coconut milk was not as easy to find, but after some calls, I found some. In one store, they had it next to the spices. If you can only find the regular coconut milk [comes in a can], then you should be able to add water to it to make it lite. The calorie count for lite is 50 and the calorie count for regular is 93, so if I run out of lite, I’ll just use half regular and half water. By the second phase, the shakes use some water anyway……..and much less coconut milk.

      • Dr. C

I used Silk coconut milk or Almond Breeze almond milk

If doubling the shakes to make for 2 people, do you have to use the same like fruit/fiber or can it be mixed. Example, my husband and I will split the shake so instead of using 3/4 C Yogurt, we will use 1 1/2 C yogurt – easy enough. Then do we use 16 strawberries (8 for each of us) or can we use 8 strawberries (his) and 1 banana (mine) and mix it all in one shake that we both split so it is a banana strawberry shake?
    Thanks,
    Manza

On day one of the diet, and I’m not sure how much ricotta cheese I te with the first snack. It says to put 2T on each quarter of the bell pepper. Is that 8T altogether, or am I to spread 2T between all four pieces o the pepper?

I do not like any of the soup recipes in the book.  Any suggestions?

    • Dr. C

I made cabbage soup using cabbage onions, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, celery, garlic, green onions, kidney beans, and vegatable broth. I am down 7# in 4 days. I plan on making lentil soup next week using the same ingredients except the cabbage. I think if you stick to veggies you are doing what is needed.

  • Betty_boop4646

I just read the book.  I do not like their soup recipes.  Any suggestions:

  • Ali

I have to attend a luncheon on day 2 and cannot ring my own food.  How do I get around this?  I am thinking that if I have the shakes for breakfast and dinner and at the luncheon try to stick with soup and salad that may somewhat work.  Or should I just start over again the next day?  This will be a continual problem and I am not sure how you deal with these things!

I would like to see comments / questions with a recent date, not  9 or 10 months ago.  Are these people still on this diet or did they give up because of misprints in the “diet book”.  I am skeptical of starting this diet with the comments I have read here.

I just started this diet 2 days ago, since I didn’t have the book yet I printed the lists off the Internet. For the shakes I used unsweetened almond milk, protein powder, banana, peanut butter, flaxseed, chia seeds and ice cubes, it was very good and filling, for the soup I made the Spicy Garlic- tomatoe soup with chicken it was very filling and tasted great. My snack I had 12 a red pepper with hummus, supper I had a shake. I drank lots of water and had 2 cups of green tea with no milk or sugar. The next day I had a strawberry shake etc. I am down 3 pounds. Oh, I also did the treadmill for 30 minutes each day. I would like to know if there are any sites I could go to we’re people on this diet can help one another. My goal is to lose 30 pounds, but I’m taking it one day at a time. I will follow this diet the best I can, but if I can’t find an ingredient or want to use what I have I will do that, I’m not stressing over having everything exactly like the recipe.
