Six million tulips give small-town pride a distinctly Dutch accent at the Tulip Time Festival in Holland, Michigan. In early May, half a million visitors flock to this lakefront city to tiptoe through the tulips that line the quaint downtown streets. Tulip Time celebrates not only the flower, but a centuries-old spring-cleaning tradition — they scrub the streets before the parades begin. Of course there are dancers in wooden clogs, and not to be missed is the Town Crier contest. Costumed participants shout out messages, with prizes going to the best-dressed, most entertaining talker.
