Kitchen Cleaning Tips for People Who Despise Doing Dishes

Washing dishes in the sink doesn’t have to be drudgery. We seem to have lost the art of appreciating doing a job well, even one as simple as this. For some, standing over the sink washing dishes provides much-welcome ‘quiet time’, ideal for thinking or listening to music, or even chatting with other family members. And watching a beautiful china plate sparkle like new as you move it from the sink to the dish rack can be quite satisfying. You already know how to wash dishes, but here are three hints that may be new to you:

Banish germs with a short soak

If you are one of those people who is so worried about germs that even an antibacterial dishwashing liquid won’t put your mind at ease, soak washed dishes in the sink in a solution of 1 tablespoon household bleach to 4 liters water. After 5 minutes, rinse well with fresh water and air-dry.

Keep rubber-gloved hands odor-free

Unlined rubber gloves may leave a smell reminiscent of car tires on your hands. You can prevent this by rubbing a little hand lotion on your hands before putting on the gloves. There will be no rubbery smell and you will score a soothing, moisturizing treatment as you wash.

Clear up cloudy glass

Ovenproof casserole dishes made of clear glass can be spoiled with large cloudy spots, even when they are completely clean. Eggs, milk, cheese and other proteins are the culprits, but none can stand up to white vinegar. To remove spots, just rub them with a vinegar-soaked sponge or cleaning cloth.

What cleaning tricks do you use in the kitchen to speed things up? Do you spend more time loading and unloading the dishwasher than you do at the sink?
