10+ Years of Conversation Hearts

Unwrap the last decade of the popular candy's thematic take on love.

By Amy Zerello

Nothing says Valentine’s Day like Sweethearts! The bestselling treats made by the country’s oldest multi-line candy company weren’t always heart-shaped. The original assortment included horseshoes, baseballs, postcards, and watches.

In keeping with tradition, Sweethearts have been made from the same simple recipe since 1902, when they were first introduced.

But it’s clear their confectioner knows a thing or two about trendsetting too. NECCO began unveiling a handful of new phrases in the early 1990s, an idea spurred by then-vice president Walter Marshall. Original mottoes still in the mix include “Be Mine,” “Be Good,” Kiss Me,” and — of course — “Sweet Talk.” “True Love” was resurrected from the early 1900s to celebrate the company’s 150th anniversary, in 1997.

Here, over a decade’s worth of sweet sayings offer plenty of ways to speak from your heart.
