Trend watch: Small Spaces

Massive mortgages, highheating bills, and other homeowner hang-ups have sparked the “tiny house” movement, an effort to shrink home spaces and reap big benefits from lower bills and smaller carbon footprints. A new documentary, TINY: A Story About Living Small, follows builders as they construct their pint-size dream homes from scratch or buy ready-made versions (at left) from places like Tumbleweed Tiny House Company. Now IKEA is jumping on the bandwagon with an $86,500 instant home. The 745-square-foot Aktiv mini-house (created by Ideabox, an eco-friendly architectural firm based in Oregon) features one bedroom and one bathroom. The best part: no assembly required.
