How to Apply Knock-Down Ceiling Texture: Other Knockdown Textures

If you want to texture just a small area or a single wall or don’t want to mess with a sprayer, you have an endless supply of options. One of the simplest and most attractive is done with a plastic loop roller ($4 at home centers), which fits on an ordinary paint roller. To do this texture, use the same methods as described in this article except skip the spraying steps and roll on a single coat of mud.

You can also apply a knockdown texture using texture paints. Behr (800-854-0133) makes a sanded texture paint that looks even more like a stucco finish. Call Behr or visit its Web site at www.BehrPaint.com to get more information and a set of instructions.

Recipe for Rolled-On Texture:

  • Half a bucket (30 lbs.) of all-purpose joint compound

  • 1 pint water

  • Mix consistency—thick oatmeal/barely pourable

Special Tools and Materials for Knockdown Textures
  • All-purpose joint compound (with a green and red label)

  • Acoustical sprayer and compressor

  • Lexan knife

  • Thick-napped paint roller

  • 3M’s Hand-Masker or plastic sheeting

  • Blade mixer

  • Spare 5-gal. bucket

To remove popcorn ceilings, I thought you had to check first to see if contains asbestos? And if it does, then hire special contractors to remove it.
